On December 15, Nature released its “Nature's 10” list of 2022, highlighting 10 individuals who helped shape science throughout the past year. Yunlong (Richard) Cao, Leading Scientist of CPL, was enlisted for tracking the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 and predicting some of the mutations that are fueling the rise of new variants.
Yunlong Richard Cao is Chinese immunologist and currently serves as a Leading Scientist at Beijing Changping Laboratory and Research Associate at Biomedical Pioneering Innovation Center (BIOPIC), Peking University. He obtained a B.S. in Physics from Zhejiang University, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University. Dr. Cao's research focuses on B-cell adaptive immune response, antibody drugs and vaccine designs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he made key contributions to the understanding of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies, humoral immunity of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and infection, and antibody escape of SARS-CoV-2 variants. His research has been published in Nature, Cell, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Cell Host & Microbe, and Cell Research. He is a recipient of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and was honored “35 Innovators Under 35” by MIT Technology Review (TR35) in 2021 and “Ten People Who Mattered This Year” by Nature (Nature's 10) in 2022.
